In this examination, the student is expected to be familiar with swar (notes) and taal (rhythm) and demonstrate their basic application in practical music. The theoretical knowledge will be assessed orally during the practical examination.
Theory · शास्त्र
Description of prescribed raags (thaat, swar, time, vaadi, samvaadi, aaroh-avroh). Taal: Knowledge of Kaharwa, Dadra, and Tritaal. Practice of reciting with hand claps. Eight-beat Tritaal (madhya laya) equivalent to sixteen beats is also accepted.

Singing/playing and recognizing shuddha swar (pure notes), individually and in simple combinations. Introductory practice of the following swar alankars (ornamentations).
