Note · सूचना

Each candidate must be examined separately. The candidate should sing with the tanpura or harmonium tuned to shadja/pancham/madhyam. Twenty minutes is allotted per student.

Theory · शास्त्र

Detailed revision of first-year definitions. The two main systems of Indian music — Hindustani (North Indian) and Carnatic (South Indian). The three characteristics of naad, varna (sthayi, arohi, avrohi, sanchari), explanations of dhwani-naad-shruti, janak and janya raags, graha, amsha, nyaas, poorvang-uttarang, shuddha, chhayalag and sankirna raags, vakra swar, meend, kampan, sparsh swar, gamak, ghaseet. Components of a composition (sthayi, antara, sanchari, aabhog). Song forms — dhrupad, dhamar, khayal (vilambit and drut), bhajan. Ten marks in this paper are objective questions.

Recognition of the notation symbols of Pt. Vishnu Narayan Bhatkhande and Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar, and practice writing learned compositions in both systems. Notating both years’ taals — the method of writing matra, sam, khali, taali, vibhag and theka, in thaah and dugun laya. Brief biographies of Pt. Vishnu Digambar Paluskar and Swami Haridas, and an introduction to the Akhil Bharatiya Gandharva Mahavidyalaya Mandal.

Swar Knowledge (Notes) · स्वरज्ञान

Proficiency in singing, playing and recognizing shuddha swar. Sound knowledge of vikrit swar. Singing, playing and identifying groups of four shuddha swar and groups of three swar containing one or two vikrit notes. Such groups are drawn from the prescribed raags.

Alankar (Ornamentations) · अलंकार

Practice of previously learned alankars at drut (fast) tempo, plus these six new alankars in various layas, with the ability to apply them within raags.

Raag Knowledge · रागज्ञान

Revision of first-year raags, together with bada khayal / masitkhani gat in Yaman or Kalyan and Bhoop (only the compositions are required — elaboration is not). In addition, the following eight raags are to be learned.

  • Aaroh-avroh, introductory aalap, and one madhya laya khayal / razakhani gat in each of these raags.
  • Preparation to sing or play for ten minutes in the seven raags other than Bhairavi, with madhya laya khayal / razakhani gat, aalap, and taan or tode.
  • In any five of these eight raags: one dhamar (with dugun), one tarana, a sargam geet, one lakshan geet, and one composition in Jhaptaal or a bandish in Roopak. Each song form must be in a different raag.
  • The Mandal prayer "Jai Jagdish Hare", plus one bhajan and one folk song. Instrumentalists must also play a folk dhun, and demonstrate krintan, ghaseet and jamjama.
  • Ability to identify a raag from sung or played aalap.

Taal & Laya Knowledge · ताल-लय ज्ञान

Practice identifying taals as played on the tabla. Reciting thaah and dugun laya with hand claps, using either counts or bols. Reciting Vilambit Ektaal, Chautaal, Dhamar, Roopak and Teentaal in dugun with hand claps.
